What’s in Your Chewing Gum?

Every day we are exposed to chemicals in public which we have little to no control over. We do however have control over what we consume. Easily overlooked, the ingredients in your chewing gum may be causing you extensive harm. The only safe choice of chewing gum are products that are free from aspartame, sorbitol, and other artificial sweeteners.

Aspartame is one of the most common artificial sweeteners found in chewing gum. The popular sweetener was discovered by accident in 1965 when a chemist was testing an anti-ulcer drug. It’s made up of three chemicals: aspartic acid, phenylalanine, and methanol. Aspartame is around 200 times sweeter than sugar. A very small quantity goes a long way, making it extremely cost effective for manufacturers. The inexpensive cost for production comes at a high physical cost for consumers. Mounting research confirms that consuming aspartame free gum is the healthy way to chew.

The FDA approved aspartame for use in dry goods in 1981. Since the approval date, it can now be found in thousands of different food products, including the vast majority of chewing gum, diet soda, and other low calorie products. Natural sweeteners are a much better and safer option.

Aspartame currently accounts for more than 75% of reports to the FDA citing adverse reactions to additives. To date there are ninety different symptoms reportedly linked to aspartame which include but are not limited to; seizures, nausea, depression, irritability, tachycardia, headaches/migraines, weight gain, memory loss, and vision problems.

Researchers and physicians have also found aspartame to trigger or worsen chronic illnesses including; Alzheimer’s, brain tumors, Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy, lymphoma, fibromyalgia, diabetes, and MS.

Chewing gum is a very helpful component of your oral care routine. The act of chewing stimulates salivation which helps to wash away left over food particles in between meals and after snacks. However, the act of chewing also leaves your oral tissues more susceptible to chemicals such as aspartame. We’ve formulated Spry aspartame-free gum with xylitol to give you a healthier mouth and fresher breath the natural way.

Xylitol is a natural sweetener which gently cleanses the teeth and gums. It has also been shown that using sugar-free chewing gums like ones that contain xylitol, help to reduce the incidence of dental caries.
